As you may be aware female ferrets can get aplastic anaemia if they do not breed or go to the vets when they are in season. This isn't an excuse to breed from her though. There really isn't a global shortage of ferrets at the moment!

There is no excuse for breeding ferrets unless you know you can find the entire litter a very good home. Certainly don't breed if you are a novice ferret owner as there is a lot more to know about ferrets than you will realise a tthe moment and animal welfare organisations are inundated with ferrets from owners who bred and got caught out.

A jill will normally give birth to around 6-8 kits but there are a lot that give birth to 11 or 12 and occasionally sometimes even more. By 3 months old these ferrets will be virtually adult sized and have very playful sharp teeth that they put to regular use! Looking after a dozen or so of these can be a real problem for most owners and regrettably some even release the ferrets into the wild under the mistaken belief they can fend for themselves.

They can't...
