Before you get a ferret please please please read up as much as you can.  As much as we'd lovely ou to browse our site and buy a cage, lead, harness and food we really want to make sure that you aren't letting yourself in for any surprises when the day comes that your furry friend comes home with you.  There are plenty of ferret books on the market that can help you get prepared.

If you are adamant that a ferret is for you then the first thing you have to do is make sure that it is legal for your to keep ferrets in your country or state. Most places are ok with it but in some areas the keeping of  ferrets is licenced, restricted or even occaisionally outright disallowed.

Don't buy a ferret from a pet shop. As much as we'd love to breed ferrets and sell them to you there is an over abundance of ferrets looking for a good home already. Find your local ferret rescue society online or speak to your local animal shelter. There are also lots of good local ferret forums online where people will often be giving away ferrets for free after their pair has bred. This way you are also more likely to get a ferret that is used to being handled and won't want to bite you!

If  its your first time keeping ferrets please try and get an older ferret rather than a younger one. anything 9 or 10 months or older will still be cute, furry and friendly but will have grown out of  hyperactive behaviour and biting! They will still have loads of energy for playing but it will be a lot more manageable.

If you find you can manage keeping a ferret reasonably well you might want to consider keeping more than one. We don't say this so you will have a more rewarding ferret experience but so that the ferrets will! Ferrets are sociable animals and will want someone to interact with. Keeping two or more ferrets together is the easiest way for them to get this. You may find unsociable ferrets that this isn't true for such as rehomers that weren't comfortable in a group or ferrets where they previous mate has died and they aren't ready to accept another but generally its best to get two or more if you have the room.

Happy ferret keeping!
