Theres three things you need to keep in mind when thinking about where you will house your ferrets.

Firstly they poop a lot and that means you've got to have easy access to them to clean their cage. Secondly they might smell a bit with their distinct odor so you have to decide if that's going to bother you or not. Thirdly you've got to consider how much room you can set aside for the welfare of your ferrets.

If you want to keep them indoors you will want to work out how to set up an indoor cage. When we say set up we mean providing the most amount of space for them to be active in with enough separate areas within the cage to keep them satisfied and an area for them to hide away in out of the sunlight.

If you have got the room indoors you could consider getting a rabbit hutch and customizing it a bit. Put some waterproof lino on the floor so that the ferret's pee doesn't seep into the wood. Add some suspended hammock like areas inside, fix some tubes in place, maybe add a wooden box with a hole in the side and of course don't forget to add a litter tray. This way can be very cost effective and you will get great satisfaction knowing that you have personally added to your ferret's happiness through your creative ideas!

If you want to keep your ferrets outside, which is actually a very common choice , you'll want a sturdy hutch or a court.

If you are opting for a hutch you can get purpose built ones that come with a long area for the ferrets to play in without being cramped. Alternatively you can use a rabbit hutch with a run alongside.

If you plan on having a large number of ferrets eventually you might consider making a ferret court. This normally involves customizing a shed or building a large wooden framed mesh 'lean to' on the side of a wall somewhere and filling it up with wooden boxes, tubes, sleeping areas and feeding areas so that a large number of ferrets will have enough space to play and relax.
